minutesWheat swallow is a healthier alternative to traditional Nigerian swallows like amala or eba. Made from whole wheat flour, it’s rich in fiber, soft in texture, and pairs perfectly with hearty soups like Egusi, Vegetable soup, or Ogbono.
Ingredients
2 cups whole wheat flour (use finely milled for smoother swallow)
3½ to 4 cups of clean water
Extra hot water (for adjusting consistency)
Directions
- Boil Water
Bring about 3½ cups of water to a boil in a medium-sized pot. - Add the Wheat Flour
Reduce the heat to low.
Gradually add the wheat flour to the boiling water while stirring quickly and continuously with a wooden spatula or turning stick.
Continue stirring until the mixture becomes thick, stretchy, and lump-free. - Adjust Texture
If too thick, add a little hot water, cover the pot, and let it steam for 2–3 minutes.
Then stir again until smooth. - Mold and Serve
Scoop out using a wet spoon or mold with clean, wet hands into round balls.
Serve hot with your favorite soup.
Notes
- Best Soups to Serve With Wheat Swallow:
Efo Riro (Spinach vegetable soup)
Egusi soup
Okra or Ogbono soup
Oha or Bitterleaf soup
Afang or Edikaikong - More nutritious than many other swallows, wheat swallow is ideal for those seeking high-fiber or diabetic-friendly options.
- Stir quickly and in a circular motion to prevent lumps.
Add wheat flour in small batches to control texture.
For extra smoothness, you can pre-mix flour with cold water before adding to boiling water.
